DECLARATION OF PEACE

NONVIOLENCE GUIDELINES

Prepare to Declare in Philadelphia

If you were fighting a war you'd need training - get trained to fight
for Peace!

Join us for a series of Nonviolent Direct Action Workshops to
prepare for the Declaration of Peace and all peace & justice work in
general:

CREATING EFFECTIVE ACTIONS - Thursday, August 17
Get introduced to 198 ways to make your point nonviolently (well,
maybe not all 198...not in one night!). Explore how to build creative
events, and what makes an action dramatic, and involving, without
having to risk arrest through civil disobedience. We will practice
effective leafleting, petitioning and dialoging skills. Come prepared
to have fun, think creatively about how to get our message out, and
work with others.

PEACEKEEPING FOR NONVIOLENT DIRECT ACTION -
Thursday, August 24

Peacekeepers are a vital part of any action: they serve as the guides
who help realize the plans and vision. They work directly with action
participants, helping with logistics and communications and basic
services. They also help diffuse potential conflicts with bystanders or
counter-demonstrations, and handle police relations. You will learn
how to remain centered in the midst of a dynamic situation, work as
part of a team and make decisions quickly, and help prevent
conflicts from escalating. Wear comfortable clothes.

CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE PREPARATION - Thursday, September 7

***REQUIRED for people who will be risking arrest through civil
disobedience on September 25th.***

This workshop will explore the why and how of civil disobedience,
what situations and decisions you need to be prepared to face, how
to overcome problems and work together to accomplish the actions
goals, and how to deal with the unexpected. Affinity groups will form
and begin to develop detailed plans for the Declaration of Peace
actions. If you are considering civil disobedience, you need to be
here!

These workshops are free (a collection will be taken) and open to
all. You do not have to come to the whole series - you may come to
any or all of the workshops. All workshops will be Thursdays, from
6:30-9:30 PM at Friends Center, 1501 Cherry Street Philadelphia, in
the Martin Luther King, Jr. Room. They will be lead by Dion Lerman,
of Peace Partners Philadelphia, who has been training for 30 years,
including work for the Iraq Pledge of Resistance and many local and
national campaigns, with other experienced trainers.
